Organics Origami

Hopefully you’re using a kitchen compost container to collect food waste for composting in your green bins. If you haven’t started yet, please visit our Compost Services page to learn what kind of food can be composting and how easy it is to do.

One of the ways you can make collecting easy is to have a pail or container in your kitchen ready to collect food scraps as you go. This can get a bit messy, but there are a few tricks to make the process easier and mess free.

One option, suggested by one of our customers, is to put your compost in the freezer, which keeps the smell and mess to a minimum, especially on hot summer days. Check out our Compost FAQ for more information about that.

Kitchen Compost Liner

Because biodegradable plastics break down at different temperatures than organic materials, they don't compost well together and we can not accept biodegradable bags or liners in our green bins. But an option that does work well is to line your kithen green compost pail with newspaper. You can then toss the whole newspaper pouch into your green compost bin.

Here are some tips on how to use newspapers to line your kitchen container for a cleaner, “ick-free” experience. Some of the techniques are more complicated than others, so try out a few different ways to find one that works for you.
